A week of sewing day 1

May 10, 2011

So, I’m a little late with this post – but I am supposed to commit to sewing for an hour every day this week as part of the kids clothes week challenge. Yesterday I met that goal – from 1am-2am and made these pajamas =)

These are the first pair of pants I have ever made… I used instructions from Dana-Made-It on how to make your own pattern using existing pajamas, but forgot to leave enough space at the top for an elastic casing. So I did something I hadn’t done before – sewed the elastic directly onto the pants – you know, using a ball point needle and stretching the elastic as I went. I always enjoy learning and trying new techniques – so it was fun! They are by NO means perfect fitting, but they work and withstood a full day of playing!

Today I was planning on working in a sky tent that I started for R a while back…but just haven’t had time to get to it yet as I have a project due for work. So the plan is: work on my project for an hour, get A LOT done, and then work on my sky tent from 11-12 to meet my commitment. Wish me luck!

The Itty Bitty Baby Dress by Rae

May 5, 2011

Today I made Rae’s (from Made by Rae) Itty Bitty Baby Dress for R – it was really straight forward and so much fun!  She links to an enlargement patter
n for a 3T size since hers is for newborns, and I used that.  Given that R is only 2 1/2 and she is SUPER skinny, I spent some time re-working the pattern in a way that I thought would fit her better, given that she has her dad’s physical makeup (thank goodness!): tall and lean.  So after about an hour of cutting the pattern, reworking the pattern, and then cutting the fabric, I sewed for about 2.25 hours, and I was done!  It was so great!  It would have of course taken longer if I was doing it while R was with me…but she was in school today.  It was pretty funny because she helped me pick the fabric from my stash last night, so I knew she would like it.

After a lot of protests, I finally got her to put on the dress (correction: I got her undressed for her bath and then slipped the dress over her head before she was the wiser =) and she seemed to have a lot of fun running around in it!  In fact, after we finally did give her a bath, she started crying because she wanted to put on the dress instead of her PJs!

So any recommendations after using the pattern? Only that if you have a skinny child like mine, there is a LOT of room in the enlargement to remove in order to make it fit better. So just take some centimeters off the sides, a little bit off the bottom and you can shorten the sleeves a bit – and you’re good to go!

If you want to check out the original pattern by Rae and the enlargement she posted as well – please click here!

I am super excited to try out other dresses and non-clothing items for her!!

Getting excited to sew everday for a week!

April 30, 2011

I have been getting very excited about my new serger and all the new projects I am going to try as soon as I am back to my regular non-work schedule (my husband is sick of me saying “i’m going to make that on my serger!”).  I am also getting very excited about spring and all the cute dresses R will be able to wear!  So in prep, i have been looking online for different toddler girl dress patterns and came across this challenge: the Kids Clothes Week Challenge.  I love it!  I need a goal and some motivation to force myself to actually get some sewing done!  I used to find energy all the time to just sew in the evenings, but lately I’m so tired I can barely do much of anything.  So this will be my motivation =)  Thanks Elsie Marley!

Weekly photo challenge – ONE

April 23, 2011

Here is my entry for the Daily post’s weekly photo challenge posted yesterday: ONE

Addendum: in reviewing all my pictures, I realized that I think my husband L took this picture. Then I did the post processing. When we go on vacation, we both spend a lot of time taking pictures since we both en joy it. Often times, we will point something out to other one and the other one will take it and go with it. So when I look at pictures years later, I often forget who took what. But I was thinking about this one, and am pretty sure he took it – so wanted to give him credit! Now I just need to teach him how to use lightroom so he can have fun doing the post processing too!

Undiscovered Toy

April 22, 2011

Boy – I sure am looking forward to being off work for a while after today.  It is like the entire rest of my life gets put on hold!!

Along those lines, I got a new TOY (YAY!) but have not yet had time to use it (SAD!) and probably wont for another week and a half (DOUBLE SAD).

My toy is a new serger – my first!

It was a gift from my aunt – she specifically wanted to get me something that I would splurge on if I had the money…but I didn’t.  It is SO exciting – I can’t wait to use it!  I have been trying to watch the how-to videos that come with it but keep falling asleep because I am always sleep deprived when working (who am i?  i would have NEVER done something like that 10 years ago.  then again, 10 years ago I never thought I would be a largely stay at home mom blogging at all, let alone about my excitement around a sewing machine ?!).  I am looking forward to some fun projects and ideas in the next couple of weeks!

YAY!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Lines

April 20, 2011

Here is my contribution for the Daily Post’s Weekly Photo Challenge: Lines. I took a little liberty in thinking of this as “circular” lines.

This was a Christmas tree which I stood inside and spun while capturing. Hope you like it!

The babies are rearing their heads!

April 19, 2011

I planted bok choi and radish seeds in my garden about 1 week ago, and have some super cool baby sprouts coming up! I love going to the garden every day when I come home to see how they have grown!

Radish – growing so fast!

Last Friday I picked my FIRST harvest!! It was SO exciting!

My first harvest!!

It was so much more than I thought!

We were able to pick enough greens to make 7 salads!

The crazy thing is that 48 hours later, I had enough to pick for another 3 salads – I’m really loving this =)
