What’s wrong with wild grass anyways?

April 15, 2011

I’ll write more on this later (after I do some research), but lately I am asking myself: what is wrong with wild grass? It has such pretty flowers! Why do we need to spray our lawn with weed killers? Why do we need to fertilize it?

These questions may all have perfectly good and sensible answers…and are probably common sense…but I often lack that valuable quality. At the moment my uneducated thoughts are: “why spray chemicals on my lawn just so that it will look homogenous? i like flowers, no matter what kind, and don’t really care if I have multiple different types of grass on my lawn – why be picky? Isn’t a weed just a grass or a flower by another name?”

as an example, this is a picture of some of the beautiful flowers now growing on my “wild” lawn. I love them!

Grin, Pretty over watered, over fertilized all grass lawns all started post WWII with the mass movement from cities and farms to Americas tickey-tackey all look the same suburbs.

As a child, homes front yards were most devoted to a few selected flowering rose bushes or other hardy flowering plants that required little supplemental water and fertilized was always accomplished with the addition of a bit of manure from their cow pen or chicken coop.

With the cost of water and everything else on the rise, Zero scape lawns should be considered by every renter and home owner.

    Happy gardening

Beautiful shot, and I agree with you. If it were up to me, no one would kill them anymore, but people seem to have this idea that in order to be beautiful a plant must have a full name and be bought from a nursery. There’s so much ignored beauty in simple weeds!

Beautiful shot. And one of the many reasons why I agree with you. Just look at all the beauty we miss out on by having a lawn with no “weeds.”

My husband and I don’t mow our lawn until well into the season because we like to see what kind of flowers come up. We have all sorts of wild beauties that take seed and come to life in our yard. My favorite is the Indian paintbrush which we would never see if we used chemicals on our lawn to kill them or mowed too much/too soon. We also have violets, the usual dandelions (which look spectacular when their little yellow heads are almost covering the lawns and fields), and flowers I have yet to identify.

As I have stated previously, I don’t have a garden or a lawn so I don’t actually know if there are any real reasons to use weedkiller. I agree with you, though, the wild grass and flowers are much nicer. I say if research does not lead you to a valid reason not to then you should leave it as is.
